SENIOR MATCH REPORT
On the round ground at Hawthorn, Mt Lilydale could not conjure a win that would keep the club safe from relegation. After a slow start that allowed the home side a 4 goal breakaway, the Rams worked into the game and remained in striking distance at the final bend.
Unfortunately we were not able to bridge the 2-3 goal margin and were over-run at the finish. Only 4 weekends ago Mt Lilydale recorded a terrific 25 point win at home over the Hawks. That win was kickstarted from the commanding presence of Jim Baughan in the ruck, again on Saturday Extra Large Jim was the dominant tall.
Best on ground went to Jamie 2Ft Paull, in career best form and a clearance machine. Mt Lilydale had plenty of the ball, yet didnt make the most of our opportunities. It was a free-wheeling, high scoring game without the typical Mt Lilydale tackling pressure. It suited the hawks with their greater run, constantly loading up from half back and delivering to their super strong fullforward who booted 10 goals. And what about our full-forward? Young Shane SOS Roberts had a day out, kicking a best ever 6 goals! Up the other end Luke Evans continued his sparkling attack and drive but too much was left to too few and the home side ran away to win by 39 points.
With 5 matches to go, the season is still in our hands. The next 2 matches; against Albert Park at home, and Kew away, are proverbial 8 point matches and are some of the most important matches in the history of the club. Get down this Saturday to support the Rams!
RESERVE MATCH REPORT
Mt Lilydale reserves have continued their under-manned battles and played a spirited, hard-working match against the Hawks. The team was again makeshift, with 6 players getting a late call-up. The lack of training became a factor, as on the short ground the opposition were able to out-run and deliver the ball throughout the second half.
Although not shown on the scoreboard, Mt Lilydale were able to showcase their talent, and particularly pleasing to see the youngsters Jarrod, Burner, Guy, Tom, Roachy and Deano all getting involved. They will be a great future for our footy club. And in a fantastic return to form, Adam Frodo Thorne found his zip and ball handling; roving the taps, weaving in and out of traffic, and saluting with 2 terrific goals.
Dan DJ Johnson, Andrew Rodders Rodwell and Julian Russell worked tirelessly all day. Hopefully the team can work hard on the training track and get the reward this week.
